Clearing and blasting near Jordan River is creating shockwaves among opponents of Western Forest Products plans to create 319 lots on sensitive stretches of land around Jordan River, Otter Point and Shirley.
Roads are already being built in the Sandcut Creek area, even though the Highways Ministry's provincial approving officer has not yet made a decision on the subdivisions, said Maurita Prato of the Dogwood Initiative, one of the groups organizing a rally at noon Thursday at Library Square, 735 Broughton St., demanding that public hearings be held into the applications.
The forest company applied to develop the acreages just before the Capital Regional District brought in zoning changes which restricted much of the southwest corner of Vancouver Island to 120-hectare minimum.
